July 26 - Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl, a city on the Volga River, is said to have been founded in  1010 by Yaroslavl the Wise.

Our first stop was the Governor's House, a wonderful art museum.  We were greeted by the "governor's daughter" who was our hostess "since her parents were away."

At the end of our visit we were treated to a concert and dance demonstration.

Our exploration of Yaroslavl included two churches.  Near the center of town we passed the Church of Elijah the Prophet, built 1647 - 1650.

The Assumption Cathedral was rebuilt in the 16th century after the original wooden building of 1215 was destroyed by fire.  It was completely destroyed again by the Soviets in the 20th century.  It was rebuilt beginning in 2005.

The interiors of the church are now white washed with a few icons covering the walls and a new iconostasis.
