July 18 - 22 St. Petersburg Tsarskoye Selo

Tsarskoye Selo (Tsar's Village) was originally a Swedish estate.  Peter the Great transferred it to his wife, Catherine I, in 1708.  Their daughter Elizabeth was responsible for the building of Catherine's Palace.  It was enlarged by Catherine the Great (Catherine II).  In 1917 it became a museum.

In 1941 the area was occupied by the Germans.  They destroyed and plundered many of the monuments and treasures.  Restoration continues.

The famous Amber Room was dismantled and taken to Germany.  It disappeared.  What appears now is a reconstruction, the work done between 1982 and 2003.
